Geosciences provide answers to some fundamental societal problems of the twenty-first century, which include environmental issues related to waste management, mitigation of natural hazards, and shrinking resources. In the framework of the European Erasmus Mundus programme, five European institutions in fundamental and applied Earth Sciences join to initiate the Geosciences Doctoral European School (GeoDES). The goal of GeoDES is to provide doctoral candidates with a strong general background in geosciences and a first-class training in emerging research areas. GeoDES will offer PhD students the opportunity to tackle problems among four research areas, which have been identified by the consortium as first-order avenues needed to advance the basic knowledge in our disciplines, and their aspects more directly relevant for society, concurrently. Those focus areas are:
These broad topics require multidisciplinary approaches and will be of interest for candidates coming from very different backgrounds (geosciences, biology, physics, applied mathematics, computer science). |
